Probationary period

WHAT DOES “PROBEZEIT” MEAN?

The first driver's license is initially issued "on a trial basis" for two years. This phase of probation is called the trial period. These two years start on the day the driver's license is handed over.

It was introduced by the federal government to reduce the high accident rate among young drivers. The trial period only has to be run once . If, for example, you already received the A1 driving license at the age of 16, no additional trial period is required for additional driving license classes (such as B or A).

The trial period does not apply to all classes. The AM, L, T and moped classes are excluded from the trial period

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER VIOLATIONS DURING THE TRIAL PERIOD?

Anyone who obtains their first driver's license must complete the probation phase. In the event of a serious infringement (“A crime”) or two less serious violations (“B crime”) within the trial period, the beginner driver must take part in an advanced seminar (ASF) and the trial period is automatically extended by a further 2 years for a total of 4 years.

Depending on the seriousness of the violation, further legal consequences such as fines, fines, driving bans, driving license withdrawals, points in the central traffic register and even imprisonment must be expected.
